Dares Pub with the members of the Buffs at Lodge Road
366 Lodge Road which was opposite the Dares Pub, The Buffs organisation used to give Christmas parties and raise money for children in the area. During the war a land mine dropped on a house in Lodge Road and passed through the roof and all the floors to rest un-exploded in the cellar, not sure if it was 366 Lodge Road The story goes that the whole of the block had to be evacuated while the bomb was made safe as it was so big it would have destroyed many houses within the area.
Three further pictures, one of outside the front of 366 Lodge Road during the Coronation (centre), see Long live the Queen Banner above the dentist sign, so must be 1953 another at the back of 366 (left) with Mr Ashford’s Grand Parents filling a kettle with a hose pipe and the last one showing his Gran and family dressed for the Coronation (right)

If you are interested in the area as it was, then Ted and Maureen Rudges book   "Winson Green to Brookfields Through Time"  and/or their web site  http://www.winsongreentobrookfields.co.uk/ is something that’s well worth having a look at. We have been given permission to use some images from the book on this site
